Michael Fitzhugh Voted Interim Sheriff by Rutherford Co. Commission

MURFREESBORO, TN – The 21-member Rutherford County Commission voted retired Sheriff’s Department Captain Mike Fitzhugh as interim sheriff.

There were three rounds of voting among the four candidates selected before the vote. They were current Chief Deputy Keith Lowery, former Deputy Chief Virgil Gammon, Fitzhugh and TBI Agent Dale Armour.

Lowery received the lowest number of votes after the first round. Gammon in the second round. The final vote was 11 votes for Mike Fitzhugh and 10 for Dale Armour.

Fitzhugh, age 71, worked for BellSouth, was former director of the Rutherford County Rescue Squad and retired in 2013 as captain at the sheriff’s department.

The vote by the commission was forced after Robert Arnold was jailed and suspended while awaiting a trial next month on federal corruption charges.

Arnold will face the courts on February 7, 2017. The 14-count indictment charges Sheriff Arnold with honest services fraud; mail fraud; wire fraud; bribery concerning federal programs; extortion under color of official right; obstruction of justice; and conspiracy.

Also facing the charges are former Rutherford County Sheriff’s Chief Administrative Deputy Joe L. Russell II, 49, and Arnold’s uncle, John Vanderveer, 58, of Marietta, Georgia. Russell was terminated by the Sheriff’s Office on November 17, 2016.

Fitzhugh will have to take the oath of office and be bonded before he can assume the position. That’s expected on or before Monday.

Gatlinburg’s Spirit is Not Burnt Out

GATLINBURG, TN –¬†It’s been a month since wildfires began in East Tennessee which engulfed most parts of Gatlinburg.

If you walked around their world famous strip today, you’ll see a community recovering with smiles and hope.

“Everybody knows everybody,” said Cooters Manager Shannon Faulkner. “We’re all pulling together and helping each other out.”

If you walk about 500 feet away from the strip, you’ll see a different story. Many burnt down businesses, homes, and more can be seen. Faulkner is one of the many people who lost their home.

“What do I do now? That was the initial question I had after it happened,” said Faulkner.

Faulkner and his family thankfully all got out okay, and are currently staying in a hotel until they can find a permanent residence. He and many others think it could’ve been a lot worse.

“We’re all safe and that’s the important thing,” said Faulkner.

For a community which was victim to a natural disaster, Gatlinburg’s spirit isn’t burnt out.

Nate Brownfield Illuminates as Illuminate

MURFREESBORO, TN – For MTSU student Nate Brownfield, hip-hop is a life style. It’s a life style he’s been going after since he was a teenager in high school.

“I was in high school, and I was really into music playing drums,” said Brownfield.

After having several failed bands, Brownfield realized he had more motivation towards music than most the people he worked with.

He decided to change his style of music entirely dawning a new name for his brand, Illuminate.

“So, I started doing rap music and Illuminate kinda came about because Illuminate means to spread knowledge and also my name’s Nate so Illuminate,” said Brownfield.

Over the years he’s grown his brand with his team playing alongside acts like OG Maco, Twista, Ying Yang Twins, Chuck English, and more.

His main goal isn’t just becoming successful though, but spreading knowledge into people’s lives.

“I value being informed and being open to things and always trying to be a better me,” said Brownfield.

He’s not doing this all on his own either. Brownfield has a team of over 7 people to help him expand his brand and music to more people.

“Most of us that are here with Nate were friends first,” said Street Team Manager Cassy Mckenzie.

Brownfield graduates from MTSU with a focus in the  Recording Industry Major next year and plans going on tour immediately after.

“Let me be an example of things can work out, and I don’t say that like I’m on a pedestal. I have very far to go,” said Brownfield.
